A Play “Oedipus the King” of the Vakhtangov Theatre will be put on the Stage of Epidaurus dedicated to a Russia – Greece Crossed Year

On the 29 and 30 July at Epidaurus, the biggest amphitheatre of the IV century in Greece, it will be put on the stage a play “Oedipus the King” produced by Rimas Tuminas, the art director of the Moscow Academical Vakhtangov Theatre. This staging, which will take place in the frames of “Athens&Epidaurus Festival”, is a joint project of the Vakhtangov Theatre and National Theatre of Greece.

Actors of both theatres are playing roles in the stage, so a performance will be shown both on the Greek and Russian languages. Russian actor of the Vakhtangov Theatre Viktor Dobronravov who is 33 years old will play the main role.

After the premiere the staging will be shown in Athens and other Greek cities. In November the staging will be put on the Vakhtangov Theatre’s stage.

Sophocles’ play “Oedipus the King” which was written in 428-425 B.C. was recognized as an ideal tragedy in Aristotle’s Poetics and played a significant role in developing of ancient drama. The plot of the play was based on the Thebes Myths. The author is telling about a fate of Oedipus who was a son of Laius, the king of Thebes. A main character of the tragedy is a man who admitted his guilt and tormented himself because of his blame.
